NATIONAL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 2023 TACTICAL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING AWARDS WINNERS

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) is proud to announce the recipients of the organization’s 2023 Tactical Awards. Nominated by the NSCA community, these distinguished awards honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the tactical strength and conditioning community. Each winner will be formally recognized at the 2023 NSCA Tactical Annual Training this August 22-25 in Las Vegas, NV.

The NSCA is honored to announce Guy D. Leahy, MEd, CSCS,*D, as the 2023 Tactical Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year. This accomplishment recognizes the coach, researcher, tactical professional, educator, or administrator whose influential contributions lead and advance the field with measurable and outstanding results.

Guy Leahy currently serves as the Health Promotion Program Coordinator at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. Leahy is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and is CSCS®-certified. Leahy is the author/co-author of over 40 articles/papers, including original research which has appeared in publications such as The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (JSCR), TSAC Report, Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance, Medicine and Science in Sports, Exercise, Nature, Science, and Scientific American. He has presented at many conferences, most recently at the 2022 Tactical Annual Training. In addition, Leahy reviews manuscripts for several journals, including the JSCR and Military Medicine.

Furthermore, the NSCA is equally honored to announce Ryan J. Fowler, MS, CSCS, TSAC-F, RSCC*D, as the 2023 Tactical Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year. This achievement recognizes the coach whose influence within his or her assigned military, law enforcement, or fire and rescue setting exceeds that of peers. Such influence may be the result of coaching-related accomplishments, such as measurable performance improvements or injury reduction, program creation, advancement through innovation, or other initiatives that enhance wellness, health, and performance at the local level.

Ryan Fowler is the Strength & Conditioning Coordinator in the Human Performance Program at the Naval Special Warfare Center. He entered the tactical strength and conditioning field in 2011 and has previous coaching experience with EXOS, the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club, the University of Washington, and Central Washington University. Fowler received his Master of Science degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania in 2010 and his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with a minor in Athletic Training from Central Washington University. He earned the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS) from the NSCA in 2007. In addition to the coaching background, he is also a former Army Infantryman with a deployment to Iraq in 2004.
