Apply for the CPSS Exam

Before registering for the CPSS exam, you must first complete an application, submit your eligibility documents, and receive permission to test. Begin this process in advance of your desired testing date, as applications may take up to 30-days to process.


STEP 1 | Read the Handbook

STEP 2 | Select Your Eligibility Route

Eligibility is based on your level of formal education and amount of professional experience. Review the available routes and their requirements before applying.

STEP 3 | Submit Your Application and Eligibility Documents

Fill out each of the appropriate forms based on your chosen eligibility route. After we receive ALL your required eligibility forms and documents, we will review your application. Approval for those qualified will be granted within 30 days. Documents may be emailed to A $25 non-refundable application fee is due with each application. If you are approved, the fee will be applied to your registration fee. 

STEP 4 | Register

Once your application is approved, you will receive an approval email from the NSCA Certification Department with additional information about how to register and schedule your exam.​ Once you have registered for the exam, you will need to schedule and take your exam within 120 days of receiving your "authorization to test" email.

  • How do I submit my eligibility documents

    Each of the required forms have been created as fillable PDFs so that you can easily fill them out digitally. Once you have completed and saved each form, email them to with a clear subject line such as "CPSS application forms."

  • What if I have questions about my eligibility?

    If you have reviewed the CPSS eligibility page and the Certification Handbook, but still need guidance on your particular situation, please email

  • How do I send official transcripts?

    To submit official transcripts from your college or university, they must be sent directly from the registrar’s office. To be considered valid, your transcript must confirm that your degree was conferred. Transcripts must be in an envelope with the registrar’s stamp placed across the envelope flap. If you mail the transcript, the registrar’s seal must remain intact. Transcripts will not be returned.

    The NSCA also accepts official electronic transcripts (e-transcripts) that are transferred using a secure document transfer program (e.g., escrip-safe, eDocs).
